For women, the rules now allow very short hairstyles to include showing the scalp. This includes tapered back and sides of the head. In all cases, hair from the back and sides must present a graduated appearance from the hairline upward. Tapers may include a straight, blocked or rounded edge line at the back of the neck. One cut, clipped or shaved narrow, fore and aft part, no longer than 4 inches in length and no more than 1/8th inch in width is authorized.

Navy Grooming Standards

According to NAVADMIN 163/18, buns can now exceed the previously allowed three inches from the scalp as long as it is not visible from the front. An even more drastic change in policy is the authorized wear of ponytails outside of the Navy PT uniform. Female Sailors may now sport a ponytail or single braid in working uniform as long as no operational hazards are present or it doesn’t hinder the Sailor from being effective on the job. All ponytails must be no longer than three inches below the collar. “Muttonchops,” blocked haircuts, and rounded or square back haircuts are not authorized. (1) Locks must continue from the root to the end of the hair in one direction (no zig-zagging, curving, or ending before the end of the lock to dangle as a wisp or loose hair) and should encompass the whole head. Locks may also be worn in a bun provided all hair grooming requirements are met. Faux locks are authorized provided the hairstyle worn is in compliance with female hair grooming requirements.
All styles include allowing squared or rounded gradual tapers in the back of the head. Sideburns are authorized but cannot exceed the hair length of the haircut where the sideburns and side of the head intersect. Sideburns with bald hairstyles are not allowed.
